Curator: Tomasz Wendland & Frigidanto Agung Hotel de Inmigrantes (HDI) is an international project that will take place since 2012 in different locations all over the world. It relates to the real ‘Hotel de Inmigrantes’, a complex of buildings that were constructed between 1906 and 1911, in the harbor of Buenos Aires in Argentina, as quarantine for thousands of immigrants who, at that time, where arriving in Argentina from many parts of the world. The history the Hotel de Inmigrantes mirrors not only life of thousands of refugees, who were trying to begin a new life in the South and North America, but it inspires to reflect on the contemporary global migration, to think about such issues like cosmopolitanism and locality and about identity, dignity and freedom of each individual human being in every corner of the earth. Today, in time of an immediate and global communication, individuals that are confronted with the same existential difficulties, but as well with global issues, which often overwhelm a single person. It is hard to live being every day confronted with consumptionism, global threats such as. ecological catastrophe, shrinking resources, permanent wars, economical crises, desire of a permanent growth, and on going education, etc. With HDI, we will realize a series of projects – exhibitions and meetings of artists - all over the world which will enable a confrontation and dialog between artists and citizens of different origins in different local contexts. The artists live together, share the space, share food and facilities, try to adopt to the local conditions, to communicate and interact with the local society by means of art. Since 2012 HDI was organized in New York, Hasselt, Hannover, Bratislava, Montevideo and Nakanojo. We prepare projects in PetachTikwa, Bratislava, Dresden and Antofagasta and one day we would like to meet all the participated artists in Hotel de Inmigrantes in Buenos Aires. Each of these projects is an autonomous event, with a specific subtitle, so various aspects of identity of the human being lost as a part of a global village can be researched. Each meeting and exhibition will somehow relate to a different aspect of being a stranger, homeless, identity-less, manipulated, a member of a global village, one who becomes an anonymous consumer and producer at the same time, one who repeats all the truly ‘truth’, a witness of a world created by the global media, technology and capital. It is very precious opportunity to recognize own attitude in a mirror of a different culture, religion, society, tradition and strategies of the future. HDI in Jogkarta is entitled "Human Parallels" as we all experience that many personal stories, even art works may occur similarly and even at the same time in different places. Our project accompanies Jogja Biennale which concentrates on the dialog between Indonesia and different countries laying on equator. Inviting artists from many countries, as well as Indonesian, we intend to add a global context, a parallel stories discovered in unexpected moments, kind of individual narratives, which may bring people closer to each other.
