The paintings research the original textile carrier. They connect paint with the grid of the textile in an organic way by linking the – textile - layer on which the image of a painting is usually painted with the painting as an image. The paintings occupy the field of geometric abstraction. Because the woven textile underlayer with its warp and woof consists in itself a geometric abstraction, this is the language to be used to connect those two. The paintings are aware of the characteristics of the carrier. The historical textile layer is examined in the painting itself. The painting is no longer an unseen covered textile layers, the characteristics of this layer are a vivid part of the painting.

The horizontal and the vertical (as understood by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) as the male and the female) are because of this textile recognition of the underlayment of the painting, not absolute horizontal or vertical, they are flexible, because textile is.  Horizontal and vertical are therefore closely related and interwoven.

Although aware of context and art historical background the works do not come to life as concept. These stitched paintings come at its best to life as pure inspiration; a calling for beauty, or if not given by 100% pure inspiration as a mix of idea/concept with inspiration.

Carina Ellemers (b. 1965 in Amsterdam) studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. She presenting five of her stitched paintings to Indonesia. By showing them she wants to experience how the works connect with an Indonesian surrounding. Are they very Western, European, Dutch? Is the relationship between modernity and craft and something you might call primitive in the works, to be recognized? Are the more universal values really universal, do they connect?
